The Swamp Harrier is a familiar bird of prey often seen alone flying low over crops or swamps, its wings held in a distinctive v shape. Its white rump distinguishes it from the less common Spotted Harrier. It feeds on young rabbits, mice, rats and aquatic birds.

It builds a nest on the ground, often in standing crops, or in tall swamp vegetation. It lays three to five blue-white rounded eggs.
